Production of biodegradable bags, an initiative to be welcomed

The Minister of Environment Mr. Houmed Msaïdié visited Tuesday, December 7 at the headquarters of the Association for the Sustainable Development of Young Leaders (A2djl) in the fight against plastic waste.

A visit that allowed the minister to see the facilities of the project for the production of biodegradable paper bags financed to the tune of 21 million Comorian francs by the microfinance program of the global environment fund (Sgp/UNDP/Fem).

The minister welcomed this initiative of young people who contribute to the implementation of the law No. 17011/AU named after the MP Oumouri.

This is the law prohibiting the production, import, marketing and distribution of packaging and non-biodegradable plastic bags.

The Minister welcomed this initiative and asked the Directorate General of the Environment to make every effort to support this association insofar as the government would like to expand initiatives of this kind to ban plastic bags.

In her speech, the secretary general of the A2djl, Mouniati Ismael, said that his association has just conducted the first production trials of biodegradable paper bags. She said that these facilities have an average daily production capacity of three thousand paper bags while specifying that the daily production can reach nine thousand per day.

Currently the assembly of the device is not completely finished, it remains to assemble a number of elements for it to be fully operational. The minister called for the assembly of such units in other islands to stop the proliferation of plastic waste.
